Can democracy work in America with modern capitalism marketing us into Happiness Machines?
Mindless automatons, unable to think of anything but getting a new ipod, or cell phone, or shirt, or car to fill the voids the capitalistic machine has told us we have in our souls.
Christian Social Democrat. whats "natural" about capitalism? do birds carry around greenbacks? do chipmunks have a stock market? do tortoises have a 401K? Ads |

It works fine for those of us who are not spiritually fulfilled by consumer products.

I don’t want democracy, I want to sustain our Republic thank you very much. I also want a return to free market capitalism, as opposed to the corporatism and cronyism we have today.

Unless the imperialism of the markets is stopped, democracy doesn't have a bright future.

Materialism is often seen from the left side. Why? It is the right side that wishes to move toward a pure society through morals.
Well, as a 16-year old in New York, I can only make the previous claims on my limited observations. I'm surrounded by my young peers, and their youth leads them to be exactly as you described your enemies. However, the ones who have distanced themselves from this materialism always tend to be quiet conservatives. Maybe I'm dead wrong, but that's all I can say on this subject. |

No, democracy can not work, and that is why we are not one, and never have been.
We are a representative constitutional republic. we hold democratic elections, but we are NOT a democracy. The Peoples Republic of California is as close to one as we have, where they put EVERYTHING on the ballot. Proposition this that and the other. Isn't California a shining example of how efficient a government can be? Capitalism makes us creative, and industrious, unless the government comes out with a program to provide all disadvantaged kids with an I-Pod, it makes even them figger out how to earn their own. Did I say Figger? I meant Figga. My bad!. |

As opposed to an oppressive nanny state that takes care of all our "needs" and gives us zero freedom? I'll take Happiness Machines, whatever the phuck that is.
There is no such thing as a democracy, there is only Oligarchy and Republic. |
