It's called a hashtag. I think it is a Twitter concept that links to a trending topic.

This is the second time I've found this exact question.
The # put with a word is called a hashtag. It separates it from the normal use of the word by letting it be categorized like a trending topic. For instance, if someone were to type #swag as a topic, it would be categorized with every other post with the word #swag in it. When someone searches for the word #swag, they find every post where people wanted that as a keyword about it. |

It's a hashtag. On Twitter, trending topics are preceded by the pound signal. For example: #lieswetell It's okay to be a Hufflepuff.
