How can i cheer up this marine im friends with on facebook?

We went to highschool together and had a few classes but never talked. He graduated and became a marine but lost his best friend just before he left for boot camp (1&1/2 yrs ago). He posts a lot about her and how much he misses her and he posts about how his friends aren't really his friends, they just call him when they need something. Idk, He just seems really depressed. I'd like to help him cheer up and i tried to message him once. He replied back a few times then quit. I just hate to see someone in so much pain, especially after all he is doing to help serve our country. Any suggestions?
