Why do people take Instagram so seriously?

So this girl has been following me on IG for awhile and likes pretty much all of my photos. I went to her page and just wasn't interested in anything she was posting so I didn't follow back. Well today she found my personal Facebook profile somehow and messaged me asking why I didn't follow back and pretty much demanded me to. I told her I only follow who I want to follow and if she wants to unfollow me then that's fine. I've heard of similar things happening to other people. What's the big deal?

People just take it personally

Their page is a representation of themselves so if you don't follow back they assume you don't like THEM. Which is hurtful
