How do you boost small business clientele?

How do you boost small business clientele?
I'm researching Marketing ideas on how to boost our clientele.

Of course I have read all the articles and books I can possibly find on the subject but the issue I keep running into is they don't really have anything directed at the service industry. Swimming pool industry to be more specific. Collecting customers and boosting our service sales isn't really affected by our media usage like Twitter and Facebook. Unfortunately most the folks who fan us or follow us are out of the state or don't own a pool. Obviously, we want folks looking for service and live in our service area.

I want to know what service professionals, like ourselves can do to boost our sales, and get more customers. And again I have searched these terms and read about 1000 hours worth of material that is great for folks who have a retail business or can reach outside their immediate area.

I want to know how I can reach our community. Tried and true ways as well as any new innovative ways. How do I get folks to notice us? How do I get folks to give us a try?

Outside of referrals (which is always the best marketing) and Craigslist (which has pulled us several new clients) what else is there?

Maybe this is a challenge or outside your area of expertise. But this is what I am personally looking for.

i'm not sure what type of services your business offers exactly but the best and most cost efficient what to spread awareness in your community is to use non-traditional marketing techniques. find creative ways to get people's attention and get people to talk about that event/act/your business.

if i knew exactly what you do i might've been able to give a specific example of what you could do. things like what Honest Ed's founder did (ex. he painted an elephant pink as a promotion to his business, along many other ridiculous things that got his community talking). this is an exaggerated example, but it gets the idea across. doing something worth talking about and Unique is the most effective (and cheapest) way to get many people talking about your business.
