Can I cancel my phone number on Facebook, for a new Facebook account?

I've just recently started using Facebook, but the email I've got, won't let me log in so I can confirm the confirmation, I had to use my phone number so I could confirm my Facebook account.
But since it won't let me log in to get to the confirmation email I've had to make a new email, but I need to use my phone number so I can activate this, is there anyway I can use it? It keeps saying it's recently been used to activate another account, how long does it take so I can use this phone number again for my newest account, or can you use it again?
This is the message I keep getting. "The phone number you're trying to verify was recently used to verify a different account. Please try a different number."

start another email account and put a facebook account with it. the phone number shouldn't matter.
