are these emails from twitter spam or are they true ?

two people on twitter (one of which follows me, and i them. the other i follow but they dont follow me) have sent direct messages saying 'hey someone is writing offensive things that are about you' and 'hey someone is making up cruel posts that are about you' . they both had a link after the message but the link doesnt work. i dont know weather these are spam or something, because the messages were pretty similar and had nothing personal to me on them. obviously i want to know if its true because someone might be saying cruel things about me but now that ive had two i'm doubting its real ?
oh and i recieved the emails within about 4/5 hours of each other
i've just recieved another ! thats three now, i think it's definitely fake :')

Look at the email sender's email address, if it's under the twitter.com domain (or something like postmaster.twitter.com) then it's a legit email. Although from what you've said it sounds more like an advertising scheme that's baiting you into clicking the links. Which I wouldn't recommend.

I've had similar experiences with what you're talking about on a couple other social networks.
