What does the "#(word)" mean?
Ok, I admit it. I'm probably the only one in America who does not use Twitter. I am a FB junkie but I just remember the days when Twitter first came out and comedians were making fun of it because people were tweeting EVERYTHING they did(including eating cereal and using the restroom!) Kinda turned me off of it. Anyway, since I am not a user I am not "in" on the icons and verbage that twitter users use. Still I have to read about stars tweet about things like "#weaksauce". So what does the # sign mean?

Kind of like a witty side note. Some thing that usually wouldn't make sense at the end of the sentence, therefore it is added to the end.

They are called "hashtags" and they are simply used to tag your tweet to a certain topic.

See here for more info: http://twitter.pbworks.com/w/page/1779812/Hashtags

Twitter has a pretty short word limit so let's say if I want to say 'mum made me accompany her to walmart. I'm annoyed'
I can cut it short by saying

Mum made me accompany her to walmart #annoyed

is a called a hash tag. On Twitter, it's used for what are called trending topics. If you do #weaksauce on twitter, it lights up blue and you click on it. Clicking on it brings up other people's tweets with the same hash tag. It's to see if other people are tweeting about the same topic.

Ex. I failed a test today #lifesucks
Click on it, and you see that 500 + other people are using the same hash tag and tweeting about the same topic of "life sucks".

They are hash tags, some of them turn into trending topics as it is called. for example the day Casey Anthony was acquitted one of the trending topics was #JusticeForCaylee

sign in twitter represents the subject of discussion. It is also known as hash tag.

If you own a website or a blog, then twitter is a must because it is one of the best social networking site available out there that can generate huge traffic to your site. Internet marketers also use them in promoting their business.

It provides freedom and flexibility within the limitation of 140 characters, that's why we find users playing around with twitter, however if used effectively it can even help you earn money online.
