basically they are codes for symbols on MSN/Windows Live Messenger
on msn/windows messenger:

(L) = heart sign
(8) = music note
(Y) = thumbs up
i don't know what © means
they don't show up on twitter so I don't know why people use them, probably just a habit, haha
