Threaded Mode | Linear Mode

So I've heard of 'merging' two or more pages recently and I'm a little confused.

If I were to merge two pages, will the likes of both pages combine?

And do they both have to have the same name?

The likes will combine and, no, the two pages don't need too have the same name.
I know this because someone I used to know had a 13k Stefan Salvatore page (The Vampire Diaries) and an 8k Edward Cullen page (Twilight). She merged the two, and she now has a 21k Stefan Salvatore page. c:
