How can I stop being a game addict?
Ok, ive recently turned 14 and I am noticing problems in my life due to gaming. First problem is I have problems talking to people and meeting new people. Secondly, my friends even had to talk to me about how I am spending too much time gaming. Also im very self concious and im always worried how people see me and how I look. So i'm rather addicted meaning on school nights I spend about 5 hours gaming and often deliberately not do homework and revision so I can game. On weekends I often spend about 11 hours gaming every weekend and am getting to the point where I am ignoring friends and not going out with them. I also rarely talk to people as I am one of the unpopular kids at school leading to stuttering words and also getting generally nervous. Would be great if someone could give me some advice.

Set a a time limit on your games console for each day/the week. This will help you to limit your playing time. Perhaps you could choose to only play it on certain days of the week, so that gaming does not interfere with your school work or your social life.

Hope this helps

move your games console into a more communal place (i.e. if its in your bedroom put it in the living room) so that you are unable to play when your parents in there, so you can get on with your school work....or ask your parents to take the controller away from you a few days of the week/until you have finished your work....

And?

Console gaming is great and would be a job if you play well. Gaming is a interest and hobby, you have both in gaming. It's like someone going skiing every day (when they can) because they love it.

I believe I have a plan that will work- but you should not like it.

. THE LEVELS OF EXISTENCE. L. Ron Hubbard.
.
.
1. Beliefs. 2. Thoughts. 3. Words. 4. Physical Actions. 5. Postulates. 6. Total Understanding.
.
.
.
.
. THE TONE SCALE OF AWARENESS. L. Ron Hubbard.
.
.
40. Serenity.
30. Postulates.
22. Games.
20. Action.
8.0. Exhilaration.
6.0. Aesthetics.
4.0. Enthusiasm.
3.5. Cheerfulness.
3.0. Conservatism.
2.5. Boredom.
2.0. Overt Hostility.
1.8. Pain.
1.5. Anger.
1.4. Hate.
1.2. No Sympathy.
1.1. Covert Hostility.
1.0. Fear.
0.9. Sympathy.
0.5. Grief.
0.1 Apathy.
0.0 Body Death.
.
.
. THE EIGHT DYNAMICS. L. Ron Hubbard.
.
.
1. Self. 2. Family. 3. Groups. 4. All Mankind. 5. All Living Things. 6. The Physical Universe. 7. Spirits. 8. God.
.
.
. THE AWARENESS LEVELS NEEDED TO COMMAND THE DYNAMICS.
.
.
8. Self. 12. Groups. 15. All Mankind. 22. Games. 32. Spirits. 40. God.

. THE THREE FACTORS OF EDUCATION.

THE Students must confront the Physical Example of whatever they are being taught, or else there is NO way for the Teachers to know that the Pupils have understood, nor can the Pupils possibly know what their Teachers are talking about.

2. The Learning-Curve must not be too steep. It must not have gaps, repetitions, nor reverses.

The Instruction must progress:

Elementary => Intermediate => Advanced Principles.

3. Each and every Technical Term Jargon must be THOROUGHLY DEFINED, using the Standard, Agreed-Upon Dictionaries and Technical Manuals.

I THINK THAT YOU ARE CONFRONTING THE PROBLEM FROM THE WRONG END. I was going to do what everyone else will do- give you a plan whereby you can give up or cut down Gaming.

To give up Gaming would be like cutting off part of your body. That is the procedure, when that part of your body is DISEASED. Your Gaming is not a Disease, it is an ABILITY.

You DON'T throw away an ability, you CONTROL it!

. THE ANATOMY OF CONTROL.

. 1. START. => 2. CHANGE => 3. STOP.

You can Start Gaming.
You can Play Games.

You cannot STOP Gaming when you SHOULD.

WHY?

It is because you DON'T know how to START the Game,
Or, you DON'T know how to PLAY the Game,
Or BOTH, that you don't know how to END a Game.

Unfortunately, there is a lack of space to explain in detail. Basically, you must be as Exhilarated to START the Games as you are to PLAY them, AND as you are to STOP the Games.

Exhilaration in a decision is complete self-Possession.

YOU calling the shots.

Feeling SAD that you HAVE to Stop is WRONG.

Do you enjoy cycling so much, you ride past where you are supposed to turn off? That would be insane!

You CONTROL your FEELINGS- how? By TALKING to yourself!

"I am ecstatically happy, that I am ABLE to STOP RIGHT HERE!"

OF COURSE you CAN'T FEEL any ecstacy, nor happiness at being taken from your favorite pursuit!

We are NOT talking about how you FEEL, but about how you ARE. "Feelings" can catch up later.

HOWEVER, ANOTHER EXERCISE you MUST implement, if you want to Control your Gaming is:

1. Go to your your usial Gaming Station.

2. DULY PAY for your time (if that is indicated).

3. ACTIVATE the Game, BUT DO NOT PLAY IT.

4. IDEALLY, you should JUST STAND, SIT, or Whatever, until the TIME you usually play runs out, then leave.
You can stay, HOLDING YOURSELF FROM PLAYING, for HALF the time, then play HALF the Game.

YOU ARE SHOWING YOUR MIND, that YOU, not THE GAME, not The Earth Universe, is in charge of whatever you do. Even this.

"Also im very self concious and im always worried how people see me and how I look."

Actually ALL 14 year olds are like that. It's not just you.

"So i'm rather addicted meaning on school nights I spend about 5 hours gaming and often deliberately not do homework and revision so I can game. On weekends I often spend about 11 hours gaming every weekend and am getting to the point where I am ignoring friends and not going out with them."

Strangers on the internet can not do magic. You know what you have to do; you have to carve out time where you do stuff other than gaming. Strangers can't help you do that.

" I also rarely talk to people as I am one of the unpopular kids at school"

Being unpopular is OKAY, believe it or not. As long as you have SOME friends, you are alright. But interacting with people is something that takes practice. If you avoid it forever, you'll never get the practice.

My guess is that your gaming habit started as an escape from your not being able to communicate well. Work on improving your speech and you'll find that your life will change. You will enjoy speaking with people, will look forward to being with others rather than escaping to be by yourself and play games. Think about your future. You want to improve yourself, get a good education, and get a good job.

Try these resources:
http://www.stutteringhelp.org there are videos online that show speech therapists working with stutterers; watch them and learn some techniques.
