To be a social worker you need a Master's of Social Work (MSW) which usually takes 2-3 years after college. There are usually always open positions for social workers, especially with the government, but they don't pay well. Don't expect to earn more than 40K/year even after years of experience. It's considered a job that is personally rewarding but also very difficult to deal with because you spend your days working with children in bad circumstances.

All they do is take kids away from their parents for no good reason. Don't like them.

No, just kidding. You get to mediate in a domestic abuse/child endangerment case. And they get paid about $50000/year in the U.S. The job market is competitive. The studies are not that tough.

My advise to you is don't ever give up on your passion. Read the three book autobiographical novels by David Pelzer entitled: A Child Called It, The Lost Boy, and A Man Named Dave.

David Pelzer's case if one of the most disturbing cases of child abuse on record in Californian history.

Tops out about 80k. Hard to go beyond that unless you get into administration, to which the sky is the limit for earnings, but at that point you wont be doing anything remotely close to social work.

Don't expect to make that at the start, not anywhere near it. Takes about 10 years to promote yourself as fully qualified.
