You were just protecting your friend but I do believe you could of handled the situation a little better than you did. You never want to stoop to their level.

Ways you can handle trolls/cyber bullies/internet deviants/stressed out teenagers/angry neckbeards/etc

1. Ignore them. Like you said they're only 'looking for attention'
2. Don't get angry with them. That's what they want.
3. Report them.
4. Play their game and beat them at it.
