Can I go to jail for hacking?
So I was able to trick my friend into giving me her password because I had a feeling she was talking trash about me, to which I learned that she was. Could I go to jail for hacking her? I don't plan on doing any damage to her account or reputation, all I really do is snoop through her messages.

I already asked this question but clearly I wasn't specific enough so let me add more details. Yes, this IS hacking. No, she didn't give me permission to access her account. She doesn't know I have her password. I had her sign up for a website and little did she know, it told me her password. So technically, I did trick her into giving me her password for her Facebook account, she just doesn't know it.
@Robert - Did you not read anything I just said? She DOESN'T KNOW I have her password. She NEVE GAVE IT TO ME. People seriously doesn't know how to read.

if she told you the password, it is not hacking, and therefore not illegal... for example i had a similar but not exact situation like you, i had the password and user name of someone i knew, and when i logged in, i not only snooped around but i also destroyed the hell out of it..

so its not hacking... its only hacking if you got her password through spyware you somehow got into her computer like with a virus.

but yes, it is illegal to hack.. but what you said is not hacking

EDIT: i actually checked again and since 2009 it is illegal.... but the way i see it you might as well do it anyway, who cares... they cant prove anything, you could easily say that she gave you permission... and if you did it from a public computer (like from a library) it cant get tracked to you

EDIT: i did even more research on this, someone tried to do this to sarah palin.. basically it was a guy she knew who had her password.. he got in, changed the password and tried to ruin her campaign by posting personal info through the email and stuff... the guy was charged and sent to prison for 1 year and 1 day... i doubt the same would happen to you though.. its probably not as serious and police wouldnt care enough for an extensive investigation

If she's stupid enough to use the same password for multiple websites, she deserves it. Don't worry, nothing is going to happen. Stuff like this happens ALL the time.

You didn't hack her account. Could she file a claim for harassment? Possibly - depends on what you do with the info you found.

But, again, this is not hacking.

Hacking is illegal and can be punishable as invasion of privacy.

Nope it's not hacking. It'll only lead onto further allegations if you posted untrue things on her account. But overall, it's not even close to illegal. It's probably illegal in her mind because she might consider it as a violation to her privacy rights.
