How can I send a private message to someone on facebook?

You must be new to it. There will be a conversation bubble shaped icon in the top right corner of the screen. Click it. Then click "send a new message." A message screen will appear. Type in your friend's name in the name bar. Odds are, Facebook will finish the name for you, kind of like Google suggestions.

Or, you can go to the person's profile and click the icon that says "message" on the top right corner of the screen.

What you probably did was write on their timeline. That will appear to anyone who is a mutual friend of both of you, or to anyone who views their timeline.
