How can I block my university seeing my Facebook?

I've recently heard from my friend that the university I attend can see our Facebook profiles. As a result somebody I'm acquaintanced with in trouble over a video he posted online, nothing serious but the university was not happy despite it happening outside away from the school and outside school hours. We wear no uniform so it would not have shamed them. He insists that his profile is set to private and he has a very small friend pool online and also its now said around the place as if common knowledge even by the lecturers that our Facebook profiles are MONITORED by the university. I want to know how I can be absoluetely sure that my profile cannot be read outside my friends list or indeed my university or potential future employers. I have liked the universities like page if that is the problem. It's not that I'm trying to avoid trouble, I never cause any but I want to keep myself to myself and not be spied upon as my life is my life not theirs.
