Look, if you want followers, don't ask people to follow you. It makes you look dumb. Start by making your own posts: edits, graphics, gifs, clever text posts, or just any casual post and TAG them with whatever they relate to. For example, if you were to make a text post that said, "John Watson's jumpers are as gay as his boyfriend," you'd tag it with Sherlock, John Watson, Sherlock Holmes, etc. and when people go through one of those tags they'll see your post and check out your blog and if it looks good enough they'll follow you. You should try following people yourself because a lot of people will follow back. You also might wanna get a theme not from the theme garden but from a tumblr user because it makes your blog look better. For that go here http://theme-hunter.tumblr.com/

EDIT: More tips:

1. Don't add captions to everything you reblog and don't add captions to every photo post you make because it's annoying to everyone.
2. Never use the XD face.
3. Don't be a whiny fangirl.
