Quite obvious, the Facebook is none of the best and featured networking site. The only site having more than 600 million active users worldwide. Apart from that, their is Orkut, Hi5, Twitter, My Space etc.

It would actually depend on the type of network you're interested in. Is it business or personal networking? If its business then the best place to start would be Linked In, http://bx.businessweek.com, and Facebook. On the other hand if its for personal networking then Facebook. I would not recommend Orkut unless you're located in India, Brasil and a few more countries where its popular (but loosing market share)
