Facebook birthday notification?

I would like to know if on your birthday Facebook sends your friends a notification. Because I sometimes get notifications about birthdays, but others I don't even though it is someone's birthday. Does it automatically send them or is it a setting you can change.

if it was a close friend, you will get a notification of birthday.

which are my close friends.

In profile settings, if you mention your birthday as public then your friends will get notification.
If it is private, then no notification will be sent.
