What up with satirical news websites?

I understand sites like the Onion exist to be funny, but unfortunately lots of my social media friends and family post fake story's that fit an agenda they are in favor of from websites that are just trying to make a joke. My acquaintances however think they are true and when I inform them that it's fake they elect to defend their position rather than admitting they made a mistake. Do they exist to fool people deliberately? I just want more in site on this. Thank you.

It's not that complicated. There will always be people out there that will fail to understand the difference between satire and reality. There are different kinds of people in this world with different views and opinions.
