Followers on Facebook and twitter?

How do people get so many followers on Facebook and twitter and I know it's not just because they are well liked :/

A lot of people either make fake accounts and follow themselves, (a lot of celebrities do this and they pay for them) buy followers, gain them because they are well known and have lots of fans, they contribute in things like #TeamFollowBack .
Sometimes it's just down to luck and time. The longer someone is on Twitter or Facebook, the more followers they are more likely to recieve.
