You put it on twitter, and it's there for the whole world to see.

1.) Yes they can and need no reason at all to view any activity you post in a public domain.
2.) If this activity is prohibited by the rules of your school then the School Administration may mete out any punishment they see fit, I'm sure your parents may appeal any punishment.

... I feel extremely violated ...

You should fee extremely dumb.

You have NO expectation of privacy on the internet. If you post child porn (sexting) or tweets or something on facebook - you can expect hundreds of thousand if not millions of other people to read it. Just because you delete it - doesn't mean it's actually gone, it can stay in cyberspace forever.

A school can make up whatever rules they want and issue whatever discipline they want. If you don't like the school rules you can pay for a private school. Your parent's could even home school you - it's not like you're ever going to get a job anyway.

Facebook has 900 million users
Twitter has over 200 million unique tweets a day - again read by hundreds of millions of users.

For god's sake please ask your parents to use birth control.

Hope this helps

Yes they are allowed to do that because anything you post on the internet is PUBLIC unless you set it to private. So if you and your classmates are dumb enough to post tweets during school then the principal can read those and use them against you! Stop using your phone during school if you dont want to get into any trouble.
1) anything you post online is public and if done during school hours you CAN get in trouble for it and the principal has every legal right to use those tweets against you or your classmates.
2) The principal can impose any punishment he/she wants that is following the school rules. It isn't for us to judge if a suspension is "fair" or not. If that is part of the rules then he/she can suspend anyone for breaking school rules. Don't text at school if you don't want a suspension.
