Should school districts monitor kids social media activity?
Apparently one school district believes so. They say it's for the safety of the children (which is always the government's favorite reasons for spying).

No they should not be allowed to interfere with a child's personal life. That's the parents responsibility.

If the kids don't like it they should go online after school. Whatever is in the school will be monitored.

If they are using it on computers owned by the school they have every right to monitor them. If it is on computers owned by the student or their parents, no. Parents should monitor their kids as many youngsters have used social media to organize events where unsafe/illegal things happen. (drugs, underage drinking, sex parties, flash mobs, etc.)

At home their parents should be monitoring such things in school kids and this should be backed by law.
At school in school time the school has a duty of care, and thus it has the obligation to ensure that children do not come to harm. How long before law suits against schools for not effectively monitoring cyberbullying become commonplace? To effectively monitor all this is very very hard and costly. How does anyone recommend schools go about it anyway? It can only work on deterrence based on reported wrongful activity, which means nothing as long as kids will not report cyberbullying. Maybe it's time to forbid personal computers in schools and return to good old learning. |
