I personally didn't like it, mainly because I'm not a fan of dystopian novels/series. But many, many people like it, so you could always give it a shot.

If you like dystopian series, go for it! it was personally one of my favorite series until I got to the end of the third book. There's a great romance, but that isn't the whole theme of the book. I would definitely recommend trying the first book though. If you liked the hunger games you'll most likely love this series even more!

I llike a good, unique dystopian, but I didn't like Divergent, and tbh, it seems like I"m the only one who've read it (the first book) and hated it because I hear all kinds of people raving about teh books and see literary agents write on twitter that they love it (those who don't represent the book) and would love to see something like it in their inboxes (this was probably a year ago). But, personally, I didnt like it. I thought it was a great concept that was ruined by a subpar and almost predictable plot. I hate book series that use teh first book to setup the storyline, and I think that's exactly what Divergent does. You basically, follow the MC through the training process, and she makes some discoveries along the way. If you hate 1st books that are nothing more than setup for the plot in the next books then you might want to bypass it. If you're unsure, I recommend getting it from the library or borrowing from a friend or waiting for a really cheap ebook sale on amazon before trying it out. In other words, don't pay full price for the book until you've tried it out. I got it from the library. I rarely read past the first book in a series unless it's so enticing for me to read the next book and this wasn't the case for Divergent.

I recommend you read as many reviews as possible before making a decision, since you're on the fence. Especially read the 1-3 star reviews to see why people didn't like it too much.
