you can make it through online.
http://www131.lunapic.com/editor/?action=transparent Else You can make it in photoshop. Open your picture in photoshop, open new page set as background as transparent, drag your old picture into new page, select background color via magic want tool, then press delete. save as .png. that's it |

Edit in GIMP and in the Layers menu you'll find a Transparency sub-menu, in there click Add Alpha channel.
Use the colour select tool to select the colour you want to be transparent (or select the areas you want to be transparent, then press the Del key (that deletes everything in the selected area and makes it transparent - if it's transparent it shows up in gimp like a grey checkerboard effect to show you it's transparent. Then Export the file to either a PNG or GIF, don't use JPG - JPG can't handle transparency layers. GIF has a limited colour palette so isn't suitable if the image is photo (only use GIF's if it's a drawing and has limited colours - don't use it if the picture has gradients, or uses dithering). PNG is your best bet if you want to keep the transparent layer and colours (the transparent layer is referred to as the Alpha channel). If your using some versions of GIMP you can just click Save and just change the extension to PNG, on later versions of GIMP you need to use the Export function to Export to PNG. You also might want to save a copy of it as an XCF file. XCF files can't be used on the internet, but they are handy because they keep all the extra layer information there and are the best format to edit from if you need to edit in future. |
