First of all, when you join facebook, you're asked to pick a network, whether it be school, work, or regional. Once you add a friend from that network, they will be asked to confirm that you attend/work/live in that particular network. Once you are confirmed into a network, anyone in that entire network may view your profile, but WAIT, you can change your privacy settings to where only your friends can see your profile if you don't want your network to have access. You can also have a limited profile list, where you allow certain friends to only see part of your profile. This is not very common in Facebook users but is a handy tool for privacy or people you don't know too well.

Facebook automatically makes your page "private". That is the same way for all Facebook users. You must confirm a friend request that is asking to be your friend, if you reject it they will not be able to see your profile at any time unless you confirm them.

Private pictures..ok on the left side of your Facebook page, there is an applications menu. Click on 'photos' and it will bring you to a photos homepage which usually shows your friends' photo albums. Click on 'my photos' and create an album from there. THe rest of the steps are pretty self explanatory so I don't think you'll have any problem with it! Good luck!
