Well, people are dumb. A good example is farmville, people actually pay money for that. And advertisement companies pay facebook to advertise their products and groups.

Game-farm ville and mafia wars and all those crap *** games....there like this coin system in it where you use real life money to purchase stuff in those games, whether i'd be virtual money r some other useless ****.

Less commonly: facebook has recently passed up google in search traffic, so some people/companies pay facebook to have what ever they are, highlighted/featured in searches and other stuff.

Facebook makes money from the companies that pay money to have their advertisements on the Facebook page. Also, Facebook games like Farmville that make money from people who buy Farmville gift cards or whatever have to give a portion of their money to the Facebook company.
