A meme is a cultural unit (an idea or value or pattern of behavior) that is passed from one person to another by non-genetic means (as by imitation); "memes are the cultural counterpart of genes". For instance, 1337 may be "leet" to some. Others may see a weird sock puppet instead of Domo-kun. And so on.

MEME is "An idea that is spread among blogs".
The term Internet meme (pronounced /ˈmiːm/, rhyming with "cream") is used to describe a concept that spreads via the Internet.
At its most basic an Internet meme is simply an idea that is propagated through the Web. This idea may take the form of a hyperlink, video, website, hashtag, or even just a word or phrase. This meme may spread from person to person via social networks, blogs, direct email, news sources etc....
An Internet meme may stay the same or may evolve over time, by chance or through commentary, imitations, and parody versions, or even by collecting news accounts about itself. Internet memes can evolve and spread extremely swiftly, sometimes reaching world-wide popularity and then vanishing all in a few days. They are spread organically, voluntarily, and peer-to-peer, rather than by predetermined or automated means.
Ex. The Baidu 10 Mythical Creatures (alternatively Ten Baidu Deities) - this meme, ten in number, originated in response to increasingly pervasive and draconian online censorship in China, and have become an icon of citizens' resistance to censorship.
