Do you think professional sports is idolatry?
It never ceases to amaze me, when it's like baseball season, football season, Olympics, etc, how much Facebook pages are blown up, and clothes are changed to show allegiences to sports teams, etc. Lots of money is spend on this stuff. Personally, I couldn't care less about any of it. And so it just annoys me how fired up it gets people. It especially surprises me when I see it on Christian on religious pages. Thoughts?
No Rod, those statements go together. I couldn't care less about sports.
Col 3:5 is one example that idolatry doesn't just mean bowing down or praying to something: "Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry."

1 John 2:15-17: Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.

If it comes before God then yes. If you love God more than your team I think it is ok. People can get into a lot worse than sports. One thing to keep in mind is even if your team loses, have an eternal perspective and praise God anyway because in the eternal scheme of things, it really does not matter.

"I couldn't care less about any of it."
"It just annoys me how fired up it gets people"

Aren't those two statements contradictory?

Since when is admiration for someone who excells in something 'idolatry'? Admiration can be for anyone including father, mother, son or daughter. Idolatry is about worshipping false idols and as much as people love sport and celebs, they ain't praying to them.
