whats twitter and should i sign up for it?

i was just wondering whats a twitter because everyone is talking about it and i see on everyone's website "follow me on twitter". so what im asking is:
1.whats exactly is twitter?
2. how do you talk to people you know? like finding their twitter?
3. is it good enough for me to sign up for one?
4. if they ask for my email should i put a fake one or does it have to be real? don't like handing out my email address)
isn't twitter like AIM? whats so special about it?

Twitter is a site where you can post your updates, like what you're doing or whatever, and you can follow other people, and view their updates. There's a lot of genuine famous people on Twitter, so it's handy to see what your favourite bands and stuff are up to. It's not the best for talking to friends, as you can only post 140 characters per post, but you can respond to people. I love Twitter and think it's awesome.
