Science help: Green Chemistry presentation?
Research Question: How is lead used to address a local or global issue?
Maximum length: 5 minutes Chemical: lead , Product: lipstick Script: Describe the problem (local/global) that your chemical is used to address. Think: who, what, where, when, why and how. Problem: What are the names, structure and properties of the chemical used to solve the problem? Name: Lead Structure: Properties: What makes this chemical useful in this application of chemistry? More specifically, how do the properties of this chemical make it well suited to the application? What chemical processes or reactions are involved? What are the equations for the reactions? How and why do these processes/reactions help solve the problem? Is the chemical or chemical process successful at solving the problem? How effective is it? Can you find data to support the claim of effectiveness? What might limit or reduce the effectiveness of the chemical or chemical process? Is there some aspect that makes the chemical (process) highly effective compared to alternatives? Are there any “trade offs†in using the chemical or chemical process? Can you discuss advantages and disadvantages? Advantages: Disadvantages: Are some advantages (or disadvantages) much more significant than the others? Why? Choose TWO most important factors for your problem or chemical solution to discuss and evaluate. Social Economic Political Environmental Cultural Ethical Argue for & against the use of your selected chemical (process) with respect to each factor: Make a judgment (supported by evidence) about the importance of each argument: Include documented sources to support your evaluation and opinion statement. Naomi,
I have some background materials that may be useful to you including a paper on green chemistry, which I produced at a think tank in D.C. called the Competitive Enterprise Institute. We are a nonprofit group. You can start by looking at my website, which I provide for educational resources. Its at safehemicalpolicy.org. If you follow the link for research, you will find the paper on green chemistry. |
