How do I customize my notifications on facebook?

Ok, I know how to turn off all EMAILS from Facebook, I already did that. I want to stop getting certain notifications PERIOD. I'm notified every time a friend updates their status. It's really annoying every time I log in to have that little red icon showing 50 (not even exaggerating) notifications or more, most of which are status updates. Does anyone know how to stop this? I've tried going into the notification settings, but all I find are email notification settings, all of which I've turned off.

(Sorry I seem so b*tchy, I'm just a little annoyed is all, lol.)
Oh, and I don't want to unsubscribe from them because then their stuff won't even show up on my news feed. I want their updates on my news feed, but I DON'T want them in my notifications section.

what are you wanting to get in your notifications then?

there's no way to set up not getting notifications like that currently
