It's the body's immune system that gets compromised. And the way allergies work, the more you become exposed to something the more sensitive your body can become. Allergies are the way the body fights enemies inside - essentially it sends out warriors to protect the body. The body actually overreacts to the offender and go into a sort of hyperdrive. Instead of sending out a few warriors, they send out battalions. The body is hypersensitive. The practice of getting allergy shots is to introduce a small quantity of the offending agent in the hope that the body can become de-sensitized and calm down the body's reaction. I found that taking calcium/magnesium supplements helped condition the body and calmed it down a bit and my allergies calmed down a bit - but not always for long, but enough where it's not completely crazy.
