Overall I think social media enhances democracy more than it undermines it, but it does a bit of both. Social media and the internet can be great in getting people to learn about and discuss topics in ways they couldn't have even a decade ago. However, this is the internet. It's packed with trolls and crazies that people have to wade through to get at the good, competent discussions. Not to mention that despite all the information we have at our fingertips, people don't tend to dig as deep as they used to. They'll look at the title of an article and form an opinion/share it on Facebook without actually reading the article or checking other sources. In the end it's a two-headed coin. Social media can help democracy a lot, but it can also hurt it in ways, although when it comes down to it I think it's advantageous.
