The # sign on twitter is called a "hashtag" and is used to highlight certain words for people to find them easier. If you were to look up Canucks on Twitter, all you would have to do is to type #Canucks and everyone that has used that hashtag before will show on your screen. Hashtags allow you to find things very quickly and easily.
