Is it fair that employers are now spying on people's facebook pages before giving job interviews?

There are now both online and paper applications asking for your email as a required field so that large corporations can spy on your facebook profile and therefore your private life. Is that fair, does technology give people the right to nose into what you do when you are not at work?

Looking at public information is not spying.

If you want it private, use your privacy settings.

nothing on facebook is private it is a public forum if you put details of your private life and opinions on there it is open to anyone to view it

Technology gives them the ability not the right. That being said maybe you may want to watch some of your comments and the links you have on social networks.You can always start up a "dummy" account and email address for the purpose of giving your future employer access to a rather tame account of your activities. Check the privacy setting s on your accounts on the internet. If you do not want someone to see something either do not say it or do not give them access to it.
You may want to reconsider working for this type of employer that NEEDS to spy on you outside of work.

I don't care if they look at what's already public, but I don't think they should be able to get my password and look at everything. They shouldn't be able to look at my private messages that may have something that I only want to talk about with certain people.
