Do what I do: Block that person by typing their name in the block box in privacy settings. Doing so cancels the friend request, and after a day or two you could unblock that person. Its the only way. Facebook got rid of the direct 'cancel pending friend request' feature.

I dont there is a way to do it until they have accepted.Then you can delete them straight away. other alternative is to send them a message saying you added them in error and to please ignore it

I didn't know it was possible, but I have the Facebook application on my Blackberry and through it got a notification that I had a friend request from some guy I didn't know. By the time I got home from work and logged onto Facebook on my computer to check him out, the friend request was gone. I don't know how he took it back, but the notification on my phone was legit.
