Actually yes they can be deleted, but you have to know how to do it. See its actually hidden in facebook. What you need to do is log in, then find the search/help box or click this: http://www.facebook.com/help/. Type in delete facebook account and hit the search button. You'll find a page where you can choose to delete your account. When you choose it, it will ask you if you're sure you want to delete and you say yes. But here is the biggie. After you choose to have your account deleted, you must NOT log in for 14 days. Yes, 14 days. Because if you do, then the deleting process will stop, and you'll have to start all over again. I know, because I deleted mine in Nov of last year.

Facebook makes it easy to deactivate one's account, whereas the deletion process is somewhat hidden.
Here is the link. After you go here, (if logged in) press 'Submit', follow the instructions and Facebook says it will delete your account within 2 weeks, or 14 days.

Don't log in within 2 weeks, otherwise your account will come out of the deletion process. After I went through the deletion method and didn't log-in for 2 weeks, I couldn't log in anymore; my account had been completely removed, from Facebook and from Google search too.
Good luck!

It's true that you need to wait 14 days without logging in for your data to disappear with no chance of recovery. Meanwhile your stuff is just invisible. This guide will show you how to delete your account on Facebook:

Good luck!
