Facebook chat icon - app running in background?

What I would like to know. If in fb chat there is a green dot and the text "mobile" next to a person's name... it means the person is active, online, and is currently using facebook messenger, right?

But will the green dot disappear, if the person is not using messenger any more? What is mean: s/he's just not literally using it but the app is running in the background (for instance on iphone)?
So once this person (automatically logged or) logs in messenger, but never really using it - the app is just running in the background - will there be a green dot (and "mobile") next to his name or not?
