Is it true that Facebook can cause depression? or is it only for me ?
I visit Facebook once in a week. But when I log out of that, I always feel depressed and have low self-esteem

Most of my college and school friends who studied in my class have very successful professional and family lives... They post the pictures of their spouses, new homes, vacation photos, BMW cars, children etc etc

I was just an average student in class...To be frank, my career growth is nowhere close to theirs...Also am a gay man...so, single and living alone..no chance of marriage or kids....I have enough money to support myself financially....but my career, social and personal lives are a big time failure when compared to my friends in facebook

I try to disable the news feed of some of my friends to avoid seeing their posts and pics...But again while doing that, I feel that I am the one who is the loser

Is Facebook really causing depression for many people or is it just for me ?
@ Under Siege

I live in India where the gay sex between even consensual adults is a crime and illegal :-(

Just remember that people typically post the highlights of their lives, not the negatives. Updates don't give you an accurate picture into people's lives. If it depresses you, discard it. You may be gay, but you have a chance at marriage and also kids- a lot of states have recently passed pro-gay marriage rights, and many gay couples can adopt or do surrogates or what have you.

90 % of people on Facebook seem to be totally insecure, or they would not spend so much time trying to impress everyone else how wonderful they are and what great lives they live. Actually it seems they are trying to convince themselves. In the process they delight in making others feel bad about themselves. Some of the happiest people I know have deleted all their social networking accounts and actually do something VERY odd when they want company, they go out of the house and really meet them.
