Facebook Friend request not appearing?

Someone added me as a friend on facebook (someone I know from preschool, but he's out of the country a while) but when i click on the link in my email it just redirects me to my 'home page' and no friend requests appear. I've searched for him to send a friend request the other way but I don't know which profile is his as many people have his name. How do I find the request? The facebook FAQ is totally unhelpful so I turn to you!

one thing you can do is search for him with his e-mail address. you go to "add friends", and then you just put his e-mail. like that you are sure it is his profile.

i am actually affraid that the person is maybe no longer on facebook. it's not normal that the link doesn't show his profile. the only explanation i have is that he probably erased his facebook account after sending you a request...
