how do you know if you are an acquaintance or close friend on facebook?

When someone adds you as a friend on facebook you don't see the chek mark next to the friend box so everyone will know they are your friends but when you go to other people's facebook page, you clearly see that they have added the person as a friend because you can see the check mark right next to the friend box of the person they added as a friend. I think they only want to be friends with me in private but they don't want anyone else to see that they are friends with me. I am insulted.
I feel like I want to close my account because I have all of them clearly marked as my friends on facebook.
