Can you help me get up to speed on internet privacy these days?
I realize that everything I see on the internet is probably controlled by a small number of people, but can anyone catch me up to speed on what the kids are doing these days to maintain privacy? What is the best search engine, or what are some techniques I can use to find search results that might not show up (or at least to cut down on SEO/ marketing garbage)?

How do people use facebook without the invasion of privacy? And I assume they dont use gmail?

Thanks in advance for any help on this. Just need a place to start at least.

On Facebook, you can set your account to private so it may only be viewed by your friends. But the best way to maintain privacy is to follow this rule: Any info you have that you don't want others to know, do not put it on the internet.

Google and Bing are considered the best search engines. I personally don't see a difference in the results and have always used Google. The more specific you are with your searches, the less results you will get, and they will be much less broad. So if for example you wanted to find a better internet provider, put the name of your city and state in the search bar along with something like internet service providers.

Actually the internet is governed by a group called W3 its made up of employees and the public to make the internet better and its quite large! but that is kinda advanced so dont worry about remembering that, something I had to look up for a project at university. I wouldn't say there is a 'best' search engine but I think and I use google -- I would say is the most popular.

People/Companies want people to visit their websites so they use a thing called "Hits" or this could be a slang word I heard for it. So when you type in a word, for instance lets say Google and you want to search for videos of cats. You might type "Funny video's of cats" this will generally link you all the videos from youtube of cats doing funny things.

If you want to change facebook privacy settings, go to the top of the page and click the little cog wheel, this contains all the settings, security and privacy. You have the option to choose from to see who see's your information and updates.

Use open source software and avoid Google at all costs.

Open Source Operating System - Linux
Open Source Browser - Firefox
Search Engine That Will not track you or store your data - DuckDuckGo

You can not use Facebook without invasion of privacy. The best you can do is set your profile to private so others can't see your information, but your data is still in their servers.

That's the whole thing: it is out-of-control across the entire world, and "what the kids are doing" is actually the opposite of what you think.

It's the older generations that worry more about Privacy for two reasons:
They've seen more of the world and it's various forms of tyrants & tactics, and thieves that strip populations of their control over personal lives;
Those 'younger' generations have had Internet and government in their lives so long, they don't see it as anything to be worried about.

Starting point: EFF https://www.eff.org/
Bruce Schneier has written many articles about these topics and should keep you busy for a while: https://www.schneier.com/essays.html but you have a long list of reading to do my friend...and the landscape is constantly changing.
