Why did he pretend to be at uni?

I was seeing this guy a couple of months ago (not anymore though, we agreed it wasn't working because we weren't right for each other) and since then, I've realised that he lied to me.
I still have him as a friend on Facebook; I went on his profile one day and it said he was currently studying for an NVQ at his local college, and that he'd been doing so for the last two years. He told me that he was in his first year at university!
Why would he lie to me like that? Was he trying to impress me or something?

Te college course is equivalent to a 1st year at uni, it sounds more impressive that way! Don't put him down just for trying to impress you!
