Go for an HP Netbook. It will be within your budget and with all features that will last another 5 years.

You might try a place dellauction.com, which sells laptops for a great price. Refurbished.

if all you're going to do is text stuff consider the netbooks. they're cheap lightweight and get basic work done. you can listen to music on them too but you're pushing with watching videos. note: netbooks do not have optical drives.

list of manufactures
asus eee (i have one for my 7 yr old)
HP mini
Dell mini
Acer aspire one

For a full laptop look at the Toshiba x305 series (x=L, S)

good luck

Even i'm planning to buy a laptop, and have done some research on the subject Wink
i think DELL inspiron series (1525 core2duo to be precise) is the best option, which is within the budget and gives you sufficient memory and features to do all that you intend to do... also Toshiba L300 is another laptop that i found to be worth its price and having all the necessary feaures!!
