Why do people want fake followers/likes/whatever?

I see questions on here all the time where people are asking for sites to get people to follow them on instagram or like them on facebook or whatever.

What's the point? The followers would all be fake and would do nothing to broaden exposure or generate content. It's like inviting stuffed animals to a free concert. No one gets anything out of it.

Or am I missing something?

People think it's cool to have a lot of followers. But if they were really cool then they wouldn't have to ask. As far as Facebook goes I think your fb page can get deleted if so Many people don't like it.
