Does Facebook have an advertising system that uses people's profiles?

I keep receiving these wall posts on Facebook and they're all like "Check this out!" and the link is one of those advertisements of rip offs. Did someone hack facebook, or is this some kind of system facebook uses to earn money through advertising?

I got those, too, from one of my friends. One of them started out "Guys!" I hope the reason for my concern with this is obvious, being that I'm female...

I couldn't tell you exactly what's going on, but when one of my friends posted as his status for people to stop posting on his wall, another one of my friends replied that those were the people who got hacked. So that's my best guess.
