Facebook friends question?

Is it a good thing to have a lot of facebook friends? Some people I barely know in real life have requested me as a friend- why?

Most of the time people will request more people just to show off to their friends... just like on myspace. lol
But most of the time if they request you, then they're connected to you somehow... maybe from your other friends, from school, from work, etc...
The summer before my freshman year I got a facebook and I just met a lot of people on there and the first year of high school went by faster to me than for the people that had to make new friends on the spot.
