Facebook Homepage: Friends?

On the homepage of facebook, 20 of my friends appear on the left side under groups/apps/pages/etc. Certain friends always appear in the same place and never leave, while others show up every now and again.. and it doesn't always shows everyone that is online down there. How does facebook pick which friends are listed there?

I feel like its supposed to be random, but that doesn't make sense since the same few people never leave, while other do sometimes.

I believe its because those friends you see all the time are the ones you talk to or socialize with the most on facebook lol.

It's the friends that you may talk to more or visit their page the most, so Facebook puts them their because they think it will be a shortcut for you.
