Hell, wasn't all that long ago Yahoo! was the undisputed leader in search. But they gave that up to become a megaportal and try to be everything to everybody. As Larry Page and Sergey Brin could attest to, it was definitely a *cough* wise *cough* move by Yahoo!, as there was certainly no money to be made in search.

Five years ago, IMO, Y!A was a far better social network than what Facebook is now, but of course, in the interest of being everything to everybody, they let the reporting get out of control and lost the overwhelming majority of their best and brightest writers. Now user traffic has substantially diminished, stickiness has decreased, and people do their social networking on other forums.

While the successful companies of today embrace the pull economy of the 21st century, Yahoo! is obsessed with the push economy of the 1950s. Note how a century ago GM catered to the wants of consumers and surpassed Ford as the biggest automaker, because Henry Ford was determined to make cars his way as opposed to the customers' way.
